Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale
This year's event was a great success! Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Next year's Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale will be held on Saturday, 4 June. It will be our fifth anniversary - let's make it extra special!
Saturday, 5 June 2010, 8 am - 2 pm
In case of rain only, the Shelburne Community Centre on King Street will be open for vendors.
This event is sponsored by the Shelburne Longboat Society and is held annually on the first Saturday of June.
In anticipation of the 2008 celebrations, a Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale was first held in June 2007 as a dry-run to gauge community interest in holding such an event as part of the Loyalist Landing activities. The response was astounding. The Town of Shelburne basically doubled its population for one day as nearly every merchant and homeowner in the Town participated in one way or another. Communities bordering the Town, such as Jordan Ferry and Sandy Point, also held yard sales, while people from other Shelburne County communities such as Lockeport and Barrington set up yard sale tables in Town.
The Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale has its inspiration in the annual Woodworkers Home Hardware yard sale which has always been a big annual attraction in itself. In 2007, a second hardware store - the King Street Tim-BR Mart - was added to the Shelburne retail landscape and opted to use the Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale as its official opening and first annual yard sale. Many of the church and community groups hold fundraising yard or bake sales, while the Town’s restaurants feature yard sale lunchtime specials ranging from a special menu to free slushies for the kids.
What has made this event such a hit and will continue to make it such a big attraction is that there are no fees involved whatsoever. The Town of Shelburne grants a one-day blanket approval allowing merchants, homeowners and vendors to set up on sidewalks and in parks. And the rules are very simple - sellers are completely responsible for their own yard sale and for cleaning up after themselves, and any money they make is theirs to keep. It’s a formula that’s worked very well so far for everyone - the Town, the merchants, the homeowners, the vendors and the yard salers.
The blueprint for the continued success of the Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale is straightforward: simple rules, the synergy of the Town’s retail merchants taking the lead, and the basic premise that everyone loves a yard sale. These factors have all contributed to the success of this event, making it the largest yard & sidewalk sale on the south shore and a much anticipated annual event in the Town of Shelburne. In 2007 and 2008, the Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale was organized by the LL08 Society. As the Society’s mandate is now over and the Society was dissolved in February 2009, the Shelburne Longboat Society has taken over the organization of this event.

"Pulling Together"
Plant Sale
Thank you to everyone who made our first fundraising plant sale such an incredible success! Special thanks to Bob Sinden and the staff at King Street Tim-Br Mart for their hospitality and continued support!
Saturday, 29 May, 9-11 am
King Street Tim-BR Mart parking lot
This will be the first plant sale held by the Society and is intended as a fundraiser. Our thanks to the members of the Shelburne County Garden Club for their friendship and support.
On Saturday, May 29th, from 9-11 am, the Shelburne Longboat Society will hold a fundraising plant sale at the King Street Tim-BR Mart parking lot in Shelburne. Along with an extensive variety of plants and shrubs, there will also be flower seeds, pots and various garden-related items for sale, all at dirt cheap prices. As well, Valeria Keane, the Waste Diversion Coordinator for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, will be handing out free compost.
This fundraising plant sale will be held in lieu of the annual event traditionally hosted by the Shelburne County Garden Club, with Club members generously donating many plants and shrubs from their gardens to the Shelburne Longboat Society. The plant sale will be held rain or shine.
For more information or if you’d like to donate some plants, please contact Suzanne at 875-2968 or info@shelburnelongboats.com.
Local & Community Events
The Shelburne Longboat Society is very pleased to be an active part of the Shelburne County community, participating and contributing to local festivals, providing an educational component related to the area's wooden boat building heritage, and generally promoting Shelburne County with rowing crews for the longboats composed of volunteers from across the County.
For the most part, the Shelburne Longboat Society provides use of the longboats free of charge. The Society may charge a nominal fee to private organizations not registered as non-profit - any such fees received are applied to maintenance of the longboats. Since all members of the Society are volunteers, the Society will accept some form of payment for its appearance at events outside of the County, if payment is offered. To date, such payment has been in the form of gas money for transportation of the longboats and a meal for the volunteers.
Rowing Programs
From June to September, the Shelburne Longboat Society runs free "row & ride" programs in Shelburne Harbour whereby the general public has the opportunity to go for a row or a ride in the longboats. Personal flotation devices are provided by the Society and use is mandatory. All ages welcome!

For the youth of Shelburne County, the Shelburne Longboat Society is a registered community host for the SoGoActive program. Please check us out at www.sogoactive.com.
