The Shelburne Longboat Society is very pleased to be an active part of the Shelburne County community, participating and contributing to local festivals, providing an educational component related to the area's wooden boat building heritage, and generally promoting Shelburne County with rowing crews for the longboats composed of volunteers from across the County.
For the most part, the Shelburne Longboat Society provides use of the longboats at local community events free of charge. The Society may charge a nominal fee to private organizations not registered as non-profit - any such fees received are applied to maintenance of the longboats. Since all members of the Society are volunteers, the Society will accept some form of payment for its appearance at events outside of the County, if payment is offered. To date, such payment has been in the form of gas money for transportation of the longboats and a meal for the volunteers.

Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale
This year was the 5th anniversary of this popular and fun event, held on Saturday, 4 June 2011, 8 am to 2 pm.
OK, so the intermittent rain was an intermittent pain, and the temperature was a little too cool for my liking, but in spite of all that, it appears that Saturday's 5th Annual Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale was a success. Reports from across the board indicate that we had a record number of sellers this year. And all the sellers I spoke with said sales were very brisk, so much so in fact, that some were sold out by 10 am! Many businesses reported a steady stream of customers throughout the day and the Town was packed, so hopefully that means it was a good day for everyone. And the upside to the rain? Well, there were no black flies ...
The Shelburne Longboat Society would like to thank you all for participating in this year's Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale and for making it such a wonderful community event. A special mention to the Town of Shelburne for holding the event under its umbrella and granting the blanket approval for the day, to the volunteer firefighters for putting on the car wash and providing washroom access for the yardless yard salers, and to Harmony Bazaar for adding a musical touch to the day.
For planning purposes, next year's Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale will be held on Saturday, 2 June 2012, so please mark your calendars.
Shelburne's Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale has its inspiration in the annual Woodworkers Home Hardware yard sale which has always been a big annual attraction in itself. In 2007, a second hardware store - the King Street Tim-BR Mart - was added to the Shelburne retail landscape and opted to use the Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale as its official opening and first annual yard sale. Many of the church and community groups hold fundraising yard or bake sales, while the Town’s restaurants feature yard sale lunchtime specials ranging from a special menu to free slushies for the kids.
What has made this event such a hit and will continue to make it such a big attraction is that there are no fees involved whatsoever. The Town of Shelburne grants a one-day blanket approval allowing merchants, homeowners and vendors to set up on sidewalks and in parks. And the rules are very simple - sellers are completely responsible for their own yard sale and for cleaning up after themselves, and any money they make is theirs to keep. It’s a formula that’s worked very well so far for everyone - the Town, the merchants, the homeowners, the vendors and the yard salers.
The blueprint for the continued success of the Town-Wide Yard & Sidewalk Sale is straightforward: simple rules, the synergy of the Town’s retail merchants taking the lead, and the basic premise that everyone loves a yard sale. These factors have all contributed to the success of this event, making it the largest yard & sidewalk sale on the south shore and a much anticipated annual event in the Town of Shelburne.

DASTARDLY PIRATES EXPECTED AT FOUNDERS’ DAYS OPENING
Spies in the service of the Shelburne Longboat Society and the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers have recently returned from a secret reconnaissance mission reporting some disturbing news: nefarious privateers - that is, PIRATES - are once again massing their forces to disrupt the opening night festivities of Founders Days on July 21st. Forces, loyal to the British Crown, were successful last year in beating back dastardly efforts by a rogue ship of pirates attempting to interrupt the operations of the Shelburne Longboats and cause havoc with the New Jersey Volunteers’ encampment. Her Majesty’s navy and army were victorious after a long and furious battle, and in a generous show of good faith, the pirates were pardoned and their battered boat was allowed to leave peacefully in a cloud of smoke and fire, with the agreement that they would mend their wicked ways and never return to our shores.
However, our intelligence sources caution that we must prepare for the unpleasant. As a deterrent to any imminent pirate attacks, the Shelburne Longboat Society has requested a warship from the Admiralty to be positioned in the harbour a couple of days prior to Founders’ Days. This warship will provide security and peace of mind for the citizens of Shelburne, and allow the Society and the New Jersey Volunteers to stage an evening of pomp and circumstance worthy of the joyous occasion of the opening night of the annual Founders’ Days festival.
Beginning at 8:45 pm, the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers will present to the public a “sunset ceremony” at the Fishermen’s Memorial after parading from their encampment site to the memorial. Following the ceremony, the regimental troops will parade back to the encampment for an evening of rest and relaxation. Concluding the ceremony, the Shelburne Longboats will pass in front of the memorial and salute the audience and the Commanding Officer of the Regiment. The Longboats will be accompanied by the Admiral’s personal watercraft. The public is welcome to dress in period costume for the evening, and children dressed in pirate costumes will be invited to parade with the Regiment.
However, all merriment aside, we must heed the warning from our spies and be vigilant lest pirates attempt to disrupt the evening’s festivities. Since all of the longboat and regimental personnel will be occupied with the ceremony, they will have to rely on the assistance of the Town’s good citizens, and the children in particular, who will have to be on the lookout for pirate activity. If any pirates are indeed spotted, a warning of “THE PIRATES ARE COMING!” must be yelled as loudly as possible to warn the Longboats and the Regiment, and it is vital that all the children join in to shout the warning in order to be heard above the high spirits of the celebrations. Should pirates dare to venture into the harbour, the Shelburne Longboats and the New Jersey Volunteers will have no choice but to engage those evil scoundrels in a fierce sea battle - a battle not for the faint of heart that will surely see lots of musket and cannon fire, a burning boat and even a few fireworks.
The opening night festivities on Thursday, July 21st will begin at 8:45 pm on the Town’s waterfront. In case of rain, the events will be held on Friday, July 22nd at 8:45 pm. The ship attack and burning is sponsored by the Shelburne Longboat Society, Cooke Aquaculture, the Town of Shelburne, Shelburne Founders’ Days, the Shelburne Shipyard, Shelburne Diesel and the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department. Special thanks to the 3rd New Jersey Volunteers and the Lockeport Rowing Club for their participation.
