NEW SHELBURNE 50/50 DRAW TO BE LAUNCHED
Starting in February 2011, there’s going to be a new game in Town as two local non-profit organizations launch the Shelburne 50/50 Draw. The Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club, in partnership with various Shelburne County businesses, will run a weekly 50/50 draw that could earn winners anywhere from $400 - $1,000 a week. The concept for the weekly draw is based on the very popular and extremely successful 50/50 draws held in Cape Breton which benefit organizations in that community.
It is hoped that, just starting out and with modest ticket sales through a handful of businesses, the Shelburne 50/50 Draw can generate a minimum $400 weekly prize. All businesses will be given the opportunity to participate, and as word spreads and ticket sales increase, so will the amount of the weekly prize.
Being held as a year-round fundraiser for the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club, the draw presents a win-win-win scenario for all involved: the weekly winner will receive 50% of the gross ticket sales, while the businesses selling the tickets, the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club will receive a percentage of the remaining revenue. “The attraction of this fundraiser” explains Jim Mahaney, Chair of the Shelburne Longboat Society, “is that all the money generated by the draw benefits the Shelburne County community.” Adds Clark Acker, President of the Shelburne Curling Club, “and the added attraction is that local businesses are not being asked for money or donations. In fact, they will be making money.”
Tickets for the Shelburne 50/50 Draw will sell for $1 each and the first tickets will go on sale on Friday, 4 February 2011. The inaugural draw will be held one week later on Friday, 11 February 2011, at 10 am at the King Street Tim-BR Mart in Shelburne, with subsequent draws every Friday morning at 10 am at the same location. The name of the weekly winner and amount won will be posted to the Longboat Society and Curling Club websites, advertised through the participating businesses, as well as selected locations in the County.
Shelburne 50/50 Draw
Questions & Answers
What is the Shelburne 50/50 Draw?
The Shelburne 50/50 Draw is a new weekly lottery sponsored by the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club that will be held in Shelburne starting 4 February 2011.
How does the Shelburne 50/50 Draw work?
Businesses in Shelburne County will be invited to sell 50/50 tickets on behalf of the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club, with a winner drawn every week. The winner will receive 50% of the gross ticket sales, which, even at a modest estimate, could amount to a minimum of $400 weekly. The businesses selling the 50/50 tickets will receive a weekly payment of 15% of their gross ticket sales, with the remaining revenue applied to expenses and accruing to the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club as fundraising for their community projects and activities.
What’s so great about the Shelburne 50/50 Draw?
All money generated by the draw will benefit the Shelburne County community, i.e., the weekly winner, the businesses selling the 50/50 tickets, and two local non-profit organizations that are active supporters of, and contributors to, the Shelburne County community. Instead of being asked for money or donations, the Shelburne County businesses selling tickets will actually make money.
What are the details of the Shelburne 50/50 Draw?
- The first tickets for the Shelburne 50/50 Draw will go on sale on Friday, 4 February 2011.
- The first draw will be held one week later on Friday, 11 February 2011, at 10 am, at the King Street Tim-BR Mart, 71 King Street, Shelburne.

- Tickets for the Shelburne 50/50 Draw will sell for $1 each.
- On a weekly basis, participating businesses will be issued a batch of tickets to sell over a one-week period.
- The tickets and money will be collected from participating businesses by 5 pm every Thursday by representatives of the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club.
- As tickets and money are collected from the businesses, each business will receive an immediate payment in the amount of 15% of their gross ticket sales for that week starting the previous Friday and ending that Thursday afternoon.

Do businesses have to apply for a lottery ticket licence to sell Shelburne 50/50 Draw tickets?
No. Any business participating in the Shelburne 50/50 Draw will come under the auspices of the lottery ticket licence issued to the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club.
Does a business have to sell all of its allocated 50/50 tickets every week?
No. The amount of tickets a business sells is entirely up to that business. The amount of 50/50 tickets sold by a particular business every week will determine the payment received by that business. The weekly payment for selling tickets will be 15% of that business’ weekly gross ticket sales, whether it be 15% of $25, $100 or $200. In short, the more a business sells, the more money it will make!
Tickets that have not sold during the one-week period will be collected on Thursday with the sold tickets and the money, and a new batch of tickets will be issued for the next one-week period. Businesses will not be limited to a certain number of tickets. Extra tickets will be provided upon request. If a business runs out of tickets before the end of the week, it can contact the representatives listed further below for an additional supply.
Once a business signs up, can it stop selling Shelburne 50/50 Draw tickets?
Yes. If a business should decide for one reason or another that it can no longer sell Shelburne 50/50 Draw tickets, its name will be removed from the list of ticket sale locations and all items provided for the draw, such as the laminated poster, tickets and ticket box will be returned to the Shelburne Longboat Society and the Shelburne Curling Club.
How will the public know where to buy Shelburne 50/50 Draw tickets?
The names and locations of participating businesses will be listed on the laminated posters that will be provided for display in store fronts. Also, the names and locations of participating businesses will be listed on the websites of the Shelburne Longboat Society (www.shelburnelongboats.com) and the Shelburne Curling Club (www.shelburnecurling.com), as well as other various locations around the County.
